The trendy Born neighbourhood in the heart of Barcelona’s old town is home to many hidden treasures. The Gothic church of Santa Maria del Mar is one of a kind, and the nearby Picasso Museum holds the largest collection of the painter’s works. A stone’s throw away you’ll find the Passeig del Born, where Casa Nova tapas bar is conveniently located.
It’s a real treat to find a culinary gem like Casa Nova, where quality and flavour beats sophistication hands down. Authentic tapas dishes are made from fresh locally sourced ingredients. Excellent patatas bravas are accompanied by a spicy sauce, and there’s a good variety seafood dishes such as octopus, squid and salt cod. Other popular tapas include Spanish omelette, home-made meat croquettes and the typical mar y montaña combination of meat and fish. You’ll find a generous selection of traditional cured meats, salamis and cheese, which are ideal for accompanying a vermut.
Xató salad, traditionally from the Garraf area, is made with anchovies and salt cod. Ou could also try the botifarra sausage, or a veal steak from the Pyrenees accompanied by potato puree.
An à la carte selection of white, red and sparkling wines is available, but you won’t go wrong with a glass (or bottle) of the house choice. This is also a great place to try an authentic sangria or local wine concoction such as the refreshing summer tinto de verano (red wine with sprite), or agua de Valencia (cava with orange juice). Come for a drink in the evening and maybe you’ll also catch some dancing or live guitar music.
Casa Nova also opens for breakfast; their strong coffee, freshly baked croissants and delicious sandwiches will set you up for a day’s sightseeing. Their brunch options are especially delicious, with several to choose from. A “Barcelona brunch” includes tomato bread with cheese, Spanish potato omelette and cold meat, whilst the Catalan version has botifarra sausage and beans. There is also an eggs benedict dish, and a French style brunch with croissants.
