If Barcelona was a darts board, Placa Catalunya would be the bullseye. And one of the most popular establishments on this iconic square is El Corte Inglés department store, which boasts nine floors of quality brands and products including everything from fashion and accessories to electronics and kitchenware.
A new gastronomic space was inaugurated at the end of last month on the ninth floor, with a complete redesign and concept upgrade. Panoramic 240º views from the ninth floor take in La Sagrada Família, Montjuïc mountain and much of the urban skyline, making this an ideal spot to stop for a break.
La Plaça Gastro Mercat offers an extensive variety of gourmet dishes which are available from self-service kiosks spread over 2000m2, each specialising in different types of food which include a salad bar, Italian cuisine, Asian cuisine, tapas and charcuterie selections.
Local products from Catalan providers stand out among the selection, such as freshly baked bread and pastries from the renowned Baluart bakery in Barceloneta, and Obach sausages. A cafeteria and cocktail bar offer refreshments. There is also a space which can be reserved for groups, an area for nursing mothers and a kids area.
Gastronomic specialities of La Plaça Gastro are also sold at the Club del Gourmet in the basement area of the department store.
