Jocular Theatre Presents The Pillowman

Barcelona’s English language theatre company Jocular Theatre will brings the award winning play The Pillowman to the Antic
Teatre. Penned by Martin McDonagh, scriptwriter of such gems as In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, the play is the blackest comedy you’ll ever encounter.
Set in anunnamed totalitarian state, it tells the story of Katurian, a writer who is being questioned by the police on account of a series of murders that bear some disturbing similarities to his fictional tales.
Winner of the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play, the 2004-5 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play, as well as two Tony Awards, The Pillowman contains strong language and mature themes and is recommended for audiences who are not easily offended. Yet with all its narrative harshness, the story appeals to our humanity and evokes surprising feelings of tenderness from the most
hidden corners of our empathy.
Described by The Chicago Tribune as “thoroughlystartling and genuinely intimidating” and by Variety as “McDonagh’s least forgiving,
bravest play”, Jocular Theatre’s latest production leaves nothing to the imagination. James Giblin, Ben Torbush, David O’Kelly and Billy Jeffries take on the challenge of bringing the gripping story of The Pillowman to life. As the murder investigation progresses we are presented with the visual representation of several of Katurian’s short stories, brought to elegantly shocking life by Thérèse Hoben, Rafael Marrero, Jordi Hanley, and Rosa Blake. Led by the writer’s urgent need to save his life’s work, events unfold that will leave audiences wondering about the limits between fact and fiction. The combination of visual effects, lighting, and original music by Julian Jahanpour create an entrancing spell that form the gateway into a twisted world
where concepts like art, creativity, and talent may have their genesis.
Don’t miss your chance to be lullabied by Katurian’s gruesome original fairytales; your dreams are guaranteed to take an unexpected turn next time you venture to fall asleep.
