As the saying goes, good things come in threes. Utopia Markets complete their trilogy with the first edition of Utopia Markets Illustration, following on from the success of the Photography and Poetry events in a magnificent Modernist warehouse building in Poble Nou. Seventy leading edge illustrators will set up market stalls during the weekend of the 20th-22nd October, including Miguel Gallardo, Javier Mariscal, Flavita Banana and Mariona Omedes. Up and coming new artists will also be exhibiting and selling their work. The format has proved to be hugely enjoyable for both participants and the public, and the opportunity for dialogue, from asking questions to simply having a friendly chat makes this stand out from a regular exhibition.
A program of special events and food truck area add another dimension. Activities include conferences, live mural painting, installations, portraits, audio-visual screenings and workshops for kids. Look out for the documentary “Maria y yo” by Maria and Miguel Gallardo, which uses animated illustration to tell a true story of a 14 year old autistic girl who goes on holiday with her father. Live music accompanied by illustration by the group Doble Pletina opens the event on Friday afternoon.
