Brought to you by Teatro Calánime, the hit musical Cuentos Cruentos returns to Barcelona for its fourth season! Teatro Calánime is a talented theatre group with a variety of theatrical backgrounds and nationalities, and for four nights only on 17th-20th March, they will be performing Cuentos Cruentos at Utopia126. Cuentos Cruentos has received high reviews across Spain and is definitely not to be missed!
The independent musical offers an irreverent and sharply contemporary perspective on traditional tales, directed by Hugo Guzman and written by Dino Lanti (Bernat Castany). The show takes place at Utopia126, an old converted modernist factory in the heart of Barcelona’s industrial-chic Poblenou, a few minutes from Selva de Mar metro. Adding further to the mystery, the gothic industrial area contributes to the unique gothic nature of the show giving it a mysterious Tim Burton/circus feel. Cuentos Cruentos will be performed in an intimate setting where the audience is at one with the actors in the room, allowing for them to feel as though they are part of the captivating stories, providing an exciting and entertaining atmosphere.
The show’s five actors embark on a journey through an urban and terribly mundane world, where fairy-tale characters certainly don’t live fairy-tale lives: the Seven Dwarves are on unemployment benefits, the Three Little Pigs can’t find affordable housing and are forced to sign a mortgage, an overweight Cinderella who can’t pay for her glass slippers and Alice gets lost in Wonderland after popping one too many pills! Reimagining classic fairy tales and childhood stories that we are all familiar with, Cuentos Cruentos (translates to ‘Bloody Tales’) has a dark and twisted edge to it as it modernises them and brings them into todays world with current happenings from this day and age, with a critical and humorous edge.
The show doesn’t just follow a singular protagonist, but is comprised of several different stories each with different characters. The music was composed by the well known VO Quartet and changes throughout the show, featuring a variety of music genres ranging from pop, ballads, rap and more.
Cuentos Cruentos is a fresh, new and energetic show and will be performed in castellano. It appeals to a broad audience and can be enjoyed by anybody who likes seeing something a bit different from the ordinary! Cuentos Cruentos is an unconventional musical and is not just the typical ‘song and dance fairytale bonanza’. The musical is fresh, funny and deliciously gothic as it merges two very different aspects, the ‘fairytale’ and our social society of today and is appropriate for everybody and children aged 10+. What’s more, after each show Utopia126 will host a concert in the main entrance after each show, each night with different artist. Anyone can feel free to relax and join a lively atmosphere after the show!
