The Parc de Cervantes at the top of Diagonal is a real gem. It covers a space of just over 4 hectares where you’ll find more than 15,000 roses of over 200 different varieties. The overwhelming variety displayed on this little patch of land cannot be compared to anything else in the city. Thought it may seem small you will be astonished by how much time you will spend here.
The park has several routes you can take with signs all over the place explaining the history and origin of the different roses. You could embark on the classic or Asiatic route and follow the trails of the development of the rose throughout the centuries and continents. The park includes varieties from the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Indian sub continent. The biggest variety of roses are of Asian origin. You’ll find plenty of classic and even ancient species as well as new species of roses.
Since the inauguration of International Rose Week in 2001, this park has seen a constant increase in new varieties from all over the world. For one week in the middle of May you’ll see more than 60 new varieties of roses on display on a patch of 900m2 in the centre of the park. It’s a great chance to see the latest creations by talented local and international rose cultivators. The week also includes workshops on rose growing, discussion groups and a variety of conferences with themes such as the historic connection between perfume and roses. Next to the Cervantes Rose Park is the rest of the Cervantes Park, with a children’s play ground, drinking fountains, picnic tables and benches. It’s a great little spot for a picnic.
