Gaudí’s magnum opus is a masterpiece of symbolism and sacred geometry. Its towering spires represent contemporary Barcelona and attract thousands of visitors every year. Construction began in 1882 and the anticipated date of completion is 2026. You’ll notice the contrast between the recently constructed stonework and the sections that were built several decades ago; the overall effect is truly impressive.

4. Tibidabo
Look down on the city from Tibidabo mountain, which is part of the Collserola natural park that surrounds Barcelona. Visit the Sagrat Cor church and Tibidabo amusement park, complete with an epic rollercoaster and plenty of rides for the younger kids. This is a great place to come for a day trip as you’ll find a good dash of culture, entertainment and nature all rolled into one.

5. Park Güell
Gaudí’s landscaped gardens are definitely worth visiting. Beautiful ceramic tile mosaics line the ornamental pavilion, and its curved benches offer great views across Barcelona to the Mediterranean sea beyond. Pose for that obligatory selfie with the famous dragon statue, and enjoy live music from many talented buskers who can always be found performing in its caverns and corners.

6. Casa Batlló
This house stands out like a page from a fairytale, with innovative architecture and a colourful exterior. Gaudí’s asymmetrical curves and original designs continue inside, as everything from the unusual furnishings to the window frames and ceilings is inspired by natural and organic underwater shapes. Make sure you also visit the roof with its quirky tiled chimneys.

7. La Rambla
Barcelona’s most iconic street stretches from Plaça Catalunya to Port Vell and is always buzzing with life. Its highlights include the Boqueria Market, Liceu Opera House, and Miró floor mosaic near Liceu. Human statues, street performers, artists and flower stalls add a splash of colour to this busy epicenter of Barcelona’s old town.

8. Barcelona Cathedral
The city’s magnificent Gothic Cathedral is dedicated to Santa Eulàlia, one of the Patron Saints of Barcelona. According to legend, this young girl was only 13 when she was martyred, and 13 white geese now waddle around the cathedral cloisters in commemoration. Its iconic statues and religious art are exceptional, and the gargoyles that leer down from the external perimeter are also worth noticing.

9. Palau de la Música
This lavishly decorated Modernist concert hall was built between 1905 and 1908 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Statues dedicated to the muses and ornamental details paying homage to some of the world’s greatest composers are scattered below an iconic coloured glass ceiling. Catch a concert here if you can, the acoustics are excellent and the ambience is second to none.

10. Santa María del Mar
One of the finest Gothic basilicas in the world, its majestic stone interior draws your eyes along the sweeping arches of the nave and up into the lofty ceilings and beyond… Decorations are sparse but the atmosphere is breathtaking. You’ll often see rose petals sprinkled on the main steps as this is a popular venue for prestigious local weddings.
