The Dumpy Lobsters were the third band to take the stage in a series of jazz nights at El Molino, Barcelona’s famous burlesque and cabaret club, where a different band will play each Tuesday.
The venue originally opened in 1898 and was known as The Petite Moulin Rouge and with its low lighting, leather seats and fake smoke overhead it provided a sophisticated, nostalgic setting for the jazz quartet to entertain the crowd.
The group, which consist of a trombonist, a double-bassist, a guitarist and a clarinettist combined comedy with jazz in an eclectic repertoire which included numbers from Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and even a rendition of Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book.
As the name The Dumpy Lobsters suggests, the band do not take themselves too seriously. Jokes and visual gags interspersed dazzling, jazzy solos and fun moments of crowd participation.
For those who missed out on Tuesday night there are more upcoming jazz nights at El Molino. The next is The Benjamín León Trío who play on February 16. León, the highly acclaimed organist, will be accompanied by a trumpeter and a drummer and they will play a range of songs consisting of Natt Adderley, Cole Porter, Count Basie and Bernard Miller.
The following Tuesday, February 23, will see The Barcelona Swing Seranaders take the stage in the final show of the series. The quintet have recorded four albums, toured England and Spain, and perform jazz classics including classics from Jerry Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and King Oliver.
