If this experimental physical theatre performance from Czech company Spitfire had a hidden agenda it might be to hijacks our neurons and rewire the circuits of our awareness and perception into an absurdist mirror that uncannily reflects some of the more elusive aspects of our own reality and discourse. And what could facilitate this process better than several pints of beer? Two characters are on stage. Two women, wearing giant heads of men, created by the sculptor Paulina Skavova. Their movements and interactions push limits and raise new questions.
Antiwords is based on the cinematographic adaptation of Václav Havel’s provocative work “Audiencia”, whose two protagonists challenge each other to drink nine pints of beer. As the alcohol seeps through their mind and body their conversation meanders from political expression and repression, to misogyny and gender inequality, and the limitations of our human existence.
The evolution of Eastern European theatre can be savoured through Antiwords. Spitfire are currently one of the most interesting and innovative physical theatre companies in the Czech Republic, building an expressive language that refreshes the parts that other theatre can’t reach.
